About compounding

What “compounded” actually means.

A compounded medication is prepared by a pharmacy rather than mass produced by a drug manufacturer. Compounding pharmacies can offer strengths, dosage forms, and combinations of ingredients that are not available commercially, dispensed on a prescriber's order.

  • Prescription only. Dispensed to you only on a valid prescription from a licensed prescriber.

  • USP <797> sterile. Sterile preparations are compounded in a cleanroom by certified compounders, with potency and sterility verified by lot.

  • 503A scope. Federal law defines what compounding pharmacies can and can't do. Greenwich operates as a 503A pharmacy.

  • Not the same as off the shelf. Compounded medications are not FDA approved and differ from manufactured drugs. Your prescriber chooses a compounded preparation for a clinical reason, such as strength, dosage form, or availability.
